The smalltooth sawfish is one of the
largest and most distinctive species of ray
in the world. This species was once
distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico
coast and along the Atlantic coast of the
U.S. However, decades of capture, loss
of nursery habitats, and low reproduction
potential have seen the population
dwindle to a small fraction of its former
population. Today smalltooth sawfish are
found regularly only in the waters of
southwest Florida and we face the real
possibility that they will become extinct in
the U.S. In recognition of this potential
extinction National Marine Fisheries
Service listed this species as endangered
under the U.S. Endangered Species Act
in 2003. Since this population decline
many people do not even know what a
sawfish is and have never seen one.
